Monte Argentario

Ancient island, today “anchored” to the mainland by the tombolos of Feniglia and Giannella, is a place of great beauty and naturalistic value, as evidenced by the inclusion of its coasts in the Cetacean Sanctuary, a protected marine natural area of international interest established in 1991. Its entire perimeter is dotted with small coves and beaches, accessible both from land and sea, often controlled by ancient towers from the Spanish era. The turbulent past of the promontory, subjected for centuries to raids by Saracen pirates, is well represented by the two most characteristic manifestations of the area: the night of the Pirates in Porto Ercole, when, on an evening in early May, crowds of new costumed pirates animate the streets of the port and the village; and the Palio Marinaro of Porto Santo Stefano, in August, in which the small boats representing the four districts of the town compete in a speed race off the port, to remember the happy rescue of a Santostefanese fishing boat which, thanks to the skill of its rowers, managed to escape to a Barbary pirate ship hiding in a natural cave on the sea near the town. The cuisine of Monte Argentario can only be based on fish, but we must not forget the excellent white wine from Ansonica vines, once widely cultivated on the terraces overlooking the sea, now increasingly rare.

Isola del Giglio

The ancient “Isola delle Capre” is a gigantic block of granite outcropping in the Tyrrhenian Sea off Mount Argentario, to which it is joined by a regular ferry service. It is the second largest island in the Tuscan archipelago, after Elba, and boasts an unspoiled landscape, with one of the clearest and cleanest seas on the Tyrrhenian coast. Although born not many years ago, it has become a characteristic and very popular appointment The Grape Festival and the Open Cellars, which takes place in the last week of September, during which in every corner of the village of Giglio Castello you can taste specialties gastronomic dishes washed down with the local strong and sour white wine, Ansonaco, to the sound of traveling music; according to tradition, on the last evening of the party, after midnight, the celebrations end by dancing the Quadriglia Gigliese, a characteristic collective dance of the island.

Isola di Giannutri

The island of Giannutri, the southernmost of the islands of the Tuscan archipelago, is also part of the municipality of Giglio Island. Inhabited during prehistoric times, it is famous for the remains of an imposing Roman villa from the 2nd century AD. Always remained uninhabited in the following period, being flat and completely lacking in sheltered places, it was only an occasional stopover of the Barbary pirates in their raids along the coasts of Tuscany. Today it is inhabited by just over a dozen residents.
